::I was excited to bring an antique necklace to Heards Jewellers to be restored, but should have known something was up when he said he needed to buy parts from Spotlight for it. When I finally got my necklace back I was devastated to find that instead of simply replacing the silver chain between each fragile shell bead as I'd asked, he'd redesigned the necklace and removed two of the beads to make earrings because they no longer fit on the necklace. One of the beads was positioned up against the clasp so "you can grip the bead when you work the clasp" and it no longer bore any resemblance to the original. The necklace was ugly, asymmetrical and looked like something you'd buy at a $2 shop. He explained that he had made a mistake measuring the chain and didn't take the width of the beads into account so had to change the design to fit the lengths he'd produced. I expressed my dismay that it was not what I'd asked for and he agreed to try again. Two weeks later having not had any update, I called and was told that he hadn't done it yet but was "on his to-do list" so I asked for a refund and my necklace back. He then tore the necklace apart, twisting and bending the wires in the middle of the beads and breaking the chain he'd previously added. What was returned to me was a cheque (so to add insult to injury I then had to go and find a bank and wait for the money to clear) and a sad little plastic bag of scratched, chipped and cracked beads. They didn't even give me back the original chain parts, so I can't show another jeweller how the original looked. I'm absolutely heartbroken. My beautiful antique necklace has been vandalised and the fine nacre of the shell beads has been damaged beyond repair. I definitely do not recommend using this jeweller if you have something precious that needs to be worked on. By all means buy a watch strap and battery, but as far as I'm concerned they're completely incompetent at anything requiring delicacy or finesse and completely lacking in empathy.
