I think it's time for some balance here. The problems with delays - birth certificates and so on - are due to what's happening (or not) at Home Affairs in SA, not here in Wellington. My own experience with the High Coomission has been 5-Star. Last year our passports with the visas arrived 4 days after the interview in Wellington. This year we could apply in Auckland, and we were advised this morning that our passports with the visas will be delivered today, exactly 11 day after the interview. The staff in both centres have been friendly and professional. Just saying.

This is a private post sent from a work e-mail. My husband applied for a full South African birth certificate over two years ago. He needed it for his application for a British passport. About a year a half ago we received in a self addressed envelope someone else's birth certificate. We were able to track down the person and get the birth certificate to them. Then about 4 weeks ago we had a call to say that his birth certificate had arrived in Wellington and that they were checking that our address was the same. He assured the caller that it was and we waited - yesterday, nothing having arrived he rang and the phone was answered, which in itself was something of a miracle. The person who answered the phone checked and said yes the birth certificate was still there but on checking my husband found that it recorded his father as having been born in South Africa, not in England which is where he was born. So, the woman at the end of the phone said she would send it back to South Africa to have it corrected! This is a true tale but so ridiculous as to beggar belief!

Could not give no stars. I would have given minus if could. The phone is off the hook during the hours you are suppose to call. Emails hardly get answered and when they do it is just a one word answer which does not answer question. Really comes across as unprofessional and lazy. Went to Wellington today as so desperate and they had all left office early. Absolute and utter idiots. Being paid to do nothing. This service is expected in South Africa not New Zealand for goodness sake.

No response to email in over a week, no response to phone calls during the small window in which you can call, on a Monday, and one of the email addresses comes back as not valid! I reported this fault a couple of years ago and no reply like 'thanks for notifying us' and nothings been done to correct. No wonder they can't run a country! 1 Star is too generous but I don't have a choice of zero! Don't you idiots have any pride in yourselves?!

The SAHC services was really not bad. We did our home in advance and made sure we follow the process - where we were not too sure about a document, we simply took a certified copy with just for in case. We made the call, got an appointment date and info pack via email - no delays - done. The whole process felt like a completing a true/false questionnaire - if you can tick the box - great! On arrival the receptionist was firm, direct and helpful. The lady processing the applications/fingerprints was funny and we felt welcomed. Interestingly enough - neither of the ladies serving us are South Africans. The only negative experience we had was having to listen to rude and aggressive customers that didn't follow the process. It's actually a simple process to follow, just do it to the T and remain calm :-)!
