I feel conflicted on rating something that is a classic brewpub, restaurant, AND a hotel, but in this case, my rating is purely based on dining at the bar. Very friendly, welcoming staff and was cool to see/smell them making a microbrew in the back despite none of it being available on tap today which was a teasing shame. Happy hour $5 was good in that it offset how high the food prices felt to me when I was hoping for more pub food like fish and chips less than $15, not $25. Instead, went with chicken tenders w a great honey mustard sauce plus home wedges w gravy. Chicken was good but felt a little over crisp, where as wedges tasted under cooked. The gravy only helped a little to add flavour unfortunately. Lastly, the seating has seen some better days, but still comfy enough (a few tables missing stools tho?). Overall, while average for a pub, it was just that to me personally.

Lots of Character, Including a Ceiling Leak I wanted to love this hotel. It has so much character, with the brewery downstairs, the random Victorian nooks with assorted chairs. And every staff member was friendly and cheerful. Unfortunately, we woke up to a large leak in the ceiling rained onto one of our beds. The manager was apologetic, and refunded us a third of the cost, but it seems like it should have been a bigger reaction. There was no air-conditioning, and with the window open, mosquitoes ruled the night.

We had one night in Auckland after campervanning for two weeks, and I am so glad we chose to lodge here. The staff was so friendly and accommodating, from check-in to late the next day, when they stored our baggage for us so we could explore the city. They also kindly arranged a flat-rate service to the airport. The room was clean and comfortable. We had wonderful service at the bar and great local advice, always with a smile. My only regret is not having the chance to try a meal. Our sincerest thanks, Shakespeare hotel!

Cheers team at Shakespeare's, we were only there for one night but the greeting was really friendly and we had an awesome stay. Props to the General manager was super friendly and had good banter. The only criticism is no THREE WISE BIRDS CIDER! But that's lions fault not theres!!
