  WIG: Had some hair loss from chemo and got excellent service for a wig from Maryann Avery, owner of hairdressing salon 'Planet of hair'. Chose 3 pictures, Maryann had a good supply of wigs and the first one gave me to try on fitted perfectly (must be a good judge of head size). Maryann trimmed the wig just how I wanted it (feathered fringe and around ears as I wear glasses for driving - Maryann said I need to wear the glasses over top of the wig. Makes sense. I walked out with a brand new wig - didn't cost me any $ as I had a 'Wig Authorisation form' from Lakes DHB chemo unit!! Awesome!! [People with a medical condition e.g. alopecia, can get a Wig Authorisation form from their doctor also. When I got my wig (August 2015), the subsidy was $2099 incl GST for permanent hair loss and covered a wig and headwear e.g. bandanans) and $408 incl GST for temporary hair loss. Wigs can be synthetic or human hair and any length (human hair and long hair costs more, for obvious reasons). Maryann's been a professional hairdresser for many years and owns 'Planet of Hair' salon and had had chemo herself when she was 18 years old. Lots of empathy. I was given a wig stand - not a mannequin - so the wig 'can breathe', and a list of how to care for the wig (e.g. wash in cold water and don't get too hot e.g. opening oven or have it in a sunny place e.g. stand on a sunny bedside table - so wig keeps in good condition). Very helpful. I love my new wig, socialise more (was wearing hats to cover in winter as head got cold due to hair loss!), and lots of people (family, friends and even people who serve me at Countdown or lotto counter and don't know my name!) tell me "I like your hair" and "your hair really suits you" - most assumed I'd had it professionally dyed due to the highlights. When my hair grows, I'll be back to 'Planet of Hair' to get Maryann to cut and colour my real hair! I appreciate some people may have to wait a short time if the wig they want has to be ordered, in their size, but I was really pleased with the prompt caring service I received from Maryann at 'Planet of Hair'. It helped dealing with some who'd experienced hair loss. HIghly recommend dealing with Maryann Avery of 'Planet of Hair' - the only LOCAL wig supplier who's also a hairdresser, in Rotorua!
