After reading rave reviews and seeing Q featured in Metro's Top 50 2010 I made a booking for 2 at Q on a Monday night to celebrate a 2 year anniversary. The guy taking the booking was friendly, enthusiastic and he even helped arrange for a special 'Happy Anniversary' chocolate to be readied for the end of the meal. We turned up to the Westin and muddled our way through the foyer towards a restaurant which I presumed was Q from the pictures I'd seen on the website, although signage was sparse. We were asked our booking and shown to our table. Upon perusing the menu we asked our waiter about the 'Mini Desgustation Menu' as we weren't sure whether it would be enough food (there was no Degustation menu listed). He stated it as a full '5 course menu' and rattled off each of the courses in succession. We ordered. Course 1: A single scallop wrapped in prosciutto on diced cucumber with some sauces. Nice, but obviously just an appetizer or even an amuse-bouche. Course 2: Mushroom carpaccio. Delicious but very little substance. By this stage we were really craving something with some semblance of volume. Course 3: This was, maybe a teaspoon of peach sorbet. This really can't be called a course it barely wet our mouths. Course 4: This was, sadly, the most substantial of the courses with a golf ball sized cut of eye fillet and a clearly undercooked piece of tortellini. Course 5: Dessert - this was a let down also. The smallest sliver of chocolate tart I have ever laid my eyes on. My partner called this helping 'miserly', and as a dessert lover she was visibly disappointed. We finished our Mini Degustation hungry, luckily we ordered the bread sides to start or we would have been famished. The marginal additional effort and cost for Q to bring this menu to a level of decent satiation must be worth it. The overall quality of the food was above average, although definitely in a league far below say French Cafe. The helpings and overall volume of food was at best pitiful and left a lot to be desired. The service throughout was decidedly average, with the waiter taking very little interest in us and serving us without a shaving of charisma. He really did not go out of his way in the slightest and when we had paid and went to leave we had to really get his attention on the way out to be able to get our coats back. Oh, and that 'Happy Anniversary' chocolate I arranged upon booking? It never arrived. We went to Q @ Westin expecting a Restaurant in a Hotel but we left realising it was just another Hotel Restaurant.
