::Awesome forest park, close to Wellington City. We walked in from Maymorn Station, camped at the Summit, and finished at Cross Creek the next day. The walk towards the Summit is gentle and it had quite a few people cycling or walking along it on a Saturday afternoon. There are distance markers every km so you know how far you've gone and how far there is to go. There are also information panels with information about the construction and life working and living on the Rimutaka Railway. There are two free camping spots, one at Ladle Bend and on at the Summit. The Summit camping spot has flushing toilets, though no other facilities. Ladle Bend is more sheltered and closer to the river. We camped at the Summit and it was extremely windy, so we weren't able to get much sleep but that's part of the camping adventure. The walk down to Cross Creek was easy and almost entirely downhill. Headlamps/ torches are only really necessary in the longest Summit tunnel, otherwise it's probably fine though it's good to bring one with you and the tunnels can get quite cold inside. It's about 6 hours (with plenty of stops) to walk from Kaitoke to Cross Creek.
