I prefer a place where no noise after 10pm and no one can smoke just outside your room so you won't have to smell it when people do it.

I had such a great stay at the Backyard Inn. The communal bathrooms were clean but I do think they need renovated. There was a very nice man who was locking but he kept everything open a bit later so we could do finish cooking our dinner. He was so kind. The reception staff were friendly. The lady that cooked our breakfast made it look and taste AMAZING. The pool was a nice way to start my day. My overall stay was very enjoyable!!!

Actually love this place. Yes, it's basic but if you've gone for budget how can you complain? No issues with cleanliness, the staff were all really helpful and the breakfasts were absolutely delicious! We used the kitchen and it had everything we needed to rustle up a dinner. Fantastic location, especially when you take the price into consideration. Will be back later in the year (because Rotorua is just too good for only one weekend!). Thanks guys for a great stay.

Would leave zero stars if I could, worst place we stayed at in New Zealand and near the bottom of all the places I've stayed at worldwide. Room in complete disrepair, holes on the wall, holes in the sheets, stains on the carpet and cigarette burn hole in the chair. Smells bad. No AC and no screens on the windows so air out at your own risk. Super loud. Insufficient parking and toilets/showers (six showers for over sixty rooms and all the people who were camping in a nearby parking lot). Dirty bathrooms. Laundry is $4 per wash and $4 per dry cycle, coins only, reception is not open late so get coins early (they sell detergent too). We had a room with two twin beds, the room next to us had bunk beds and a twin (only slightly larger) and there were at least six people staying there, sleeping on the floor with the door open. That seemed normal and quite a few rooms were super cramped like that. Awful in every respect, go somewhere else.
