  We returned our car in Auckland. Location is easy to find with gas station right next to it. We rented the car for 4 weeks and traveled both islands without having any problems. Rate was very good and the car-ferry ticket was already included. Negative: The car was not the newest and wasn’t in the best condition. But we thought it was still safe to travel with it. Also the car was not properly cleaned when we picked it up.

  Book with APEX if you want your vacation destroyed We reserved a car with APEX for couple of weeks (23 days in total) for our big family trip through North and South Island. After arrival to APEX Auckland office, we were asked to fill in a form with several questions, like whether we ever driven a car on the left side of the road. My answer was no as it was my first time to drive on the left side. After seeing our responses, APEX employee asked me to go for a test ride around the block. Although anything like that happened to me in any other country where I was renting a car before (and it was in many places in America, Europe and Asia), I agreed (anyway it was not an offer but request). After the test ride, APEX employee told me that I failed to drive in compliance with traffic rules. I apparently stopped at one intersection where I was turning left and waited for green not realizing the light only regulates forward direction and you can turn left anytime (situation not present in Europe). Even though in that situation I was driving even more safely than required, APEX refused to honor reservation and refused to rent us a car because of failure in the test drive. After informing them that it is going to destroy our several weeks family vacation planned for several months beforehand, they offer us that we can take a bus. We left in a complete shock with our plans (hotel bookings, trips, ferry booking between North and South Island) just being entirely destroyed (as it was impossible to make it with bus connections). We were walking aimlessly around just to find another local car rental - USAVE. There we encountered another shock - we were given a car in couple of minutes without any humiliating procedure of test drive and for a comparable price. All of our plans were saved by USAVE which I still cannot believe how lucky we were. Even when we found the very last day that night before someone a bit dented our car's bonnet, USAVE return location made no problem of it! After returning home, I asked APEX by email to send me a cancellation fee as APEX conditions state that "A 20% cancellation fee applies for cancellations made within 72 hours of the scheduled start of the rental." I got a laughing response from APEX stating "Unfortunately that is not quite what is meant by cancellation fee. If a customer cancels their booking within 72 hours of the scheduled start then we charge a cancellation fee. We do not pay customers for cancelling their booking, although that would be nice!". I would recommend to consider approach of APEX if you are thinking about renting a car with them.

  The car was very reasonable price wise. Condition was less than average. The waiting time to collect was appalling. Staff were nice but seemed stressed, understaffed, poorly managed operation. Inadequate info on toll roads leading to stress for myself and wife and paying over 100 times more for the road toll than we needed to months later - they just politely told me it was my fault - too bad. Never again.

  The car was ok and for a good price. However,we waited nearly an hour to collect the car due to long queue at the store. Also the car smelled like baby poo.

  Apex car rental prices are reasonable. However, the on site staff provided incorrect information regarding tolls. This misinformation resulted in a month of calls and emails before the billing was resolved.
